Random Acts of Resistance

By: The Recalcitrant Gourmet

Back in the 1960’s and 1970’s people took up acts of resistance, small and large, to protest the Viet Nam War, Civil Rights issues, Women’s Rights issues, Animal Right’s issues and Environmental Causes, just to name a few. These acts included: burning one’s draft card, dodging the draft, marching in the streets, teaching ‘banned’ books, sending dog or cat feces to the local draft board and any number of other acts that were illegal and/or socially verboten. Today we are faced with attacks from the Right on public service workers, union members, the poor, the middles class, homosexuals and anyone else deemed ‘different’ by the likes of Fox News and the religious right. This is in combination with attempts by many corporations (who do not pay taxes or pay very little tax) to privatize everything from the roads on which drive, to the water we drink, to the utilities we need and any other aspect of a civil society.

So here is a partial (hopefully on going) list, of actions that one can implement to shake things up a bit: Let the Man know how you feel!  Silence in many cases is considered consent and we DO NOT have to consent to our Nation being taken over by the corporations that pollute, spew bigoted and non-factual propaganda, discriminate or like General Electric and Bank of America pay no taxes.

Turn that damn Faux News (aka Fox News) off! How many public places do you visit and all that is on TV is Fox? Ask politely to switch the channel. I do it all the time. Only once has anyone refused. I followed up with a letter of complaint and the next time I was in that establishment: no Fox! Fox is a propaganda machine for the Right; they are bigoted, bias and many times just plain wrong. Help stop the spread Fox of the Fox virus!

Next time a blow hard like Bill O’Reilly, Dr. Laura, Sara Palin, Newt Gingrich or Ann Coulter et al, have a book on the market and you see it displayed prominently, turn it over, upside-down and reverse the facing. You’re not preventing anyone from buying it; but let people know you disapprove of their mindless drivel!

Do not patronize that establishment! If you know and disagree with the politics of an establishment, store, business etc., by all means don’t support them. This goes for major corporations as well. Also if you know a corporation is using less healthy or non-sustainable ingredients in their products send a message with your wallet. My partner and I almost NEVER buy anything containing High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) or partially- hydrogenated oils: they are poisons!

Give the bird! Next time you see a Hummer strolling down the road, polluting OUR planet: let them know that they are part of the problem! Soccer moms and corporate lackeys alike. Socially rude? You bet! Inappropriate? Maybe? But certainly less so than killing every living creature on earth so you can look cool!

My America – My Union

Vincenzo Di Rosa CWA Local 1111

My America is not a sweatshop, one bowl of rice, or a five dollar day.

My America is a living wage.

My Union gave that to me.

My America is not a breadline, a soup kitchen, an unemployment check.

My America is job security and a contract.

My Union gave that to me.

My America is not a lost eye, a broken back, a foot, a hand.

My America is a safe workplace.

My Union gave that to me.

My America is not a plastic thing, a disposable nothing from somewhere.

My America is quality, integrity, and permanence.

My Union gave that to me.

My America is not a call on the carpet, a closed door,

One voice unheard.

My America is equality and representation.

My Union gave that to me.

My America is our America.

My America is Our Union.

We are United, Defiant, and Strong
